Longmont, Colorado
Longmont is about 10 miles northeast of Boulder. Longmont has managed to draw several major employers to its city – Seagate, Amgen and Xilinx all have large facilities in the Longmont area. The downtown area has been revitalized with a local brewery, art galleries and coffee shops. Summer highlights include several free concert venues, the farmers market and a host of other activities for all ages. As home to the Boulder County Fairgrounds, Longmont is also home to the Boulder County Fair. Although only a small town of about 150,000, the hospitals cardio unit is one of the best in the country.
Longmont was the area hardest hit by the recent housing fallout. East Longmont had the room to grow – and grow it did. Hundreds of homes were added in the mid 1990’s to well into the 2000’s. This is the period when the worst of the loan products were sold. Although greatly improved from when the bubble first burst, Longmont is still having slightly declining prices and sales. It will most likely be another year before the signs of the fallout have dissipated, which makes it a perfect buyers market!! Currently sales are down about 7% and the median price is down only by 0.9%.
During the early 2000’s, there was quite a housing boom in Longmont. The school district struggled a bit to keep up with demand. By now, several new schools have been constructed and established to provide education opportunities to the local youth. In addition, parent support continues to increase to support the efforts of the school district.
Longmont also has a recreation center and a YMCA available for children and families. Summertime is also popular for the local outdoor swimming pool and the golf courses. Given the wonderful weather along the Colorado Front Range, Golf is almost a year round sport. During the summer, there are concerts all over town and the weekly farmers market at the Boulder County Fairgrounds.
